Reversing SUV runs over, kills Kea'au man

Police identify the victim as 29-year-old Beke Robert Jr.

Hilo Police are investigating an traffic fatality that occurred in a driveway of the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna Sunday morning.

According to Big Island Police, 33-year-old Sonny D. Kalawe or Kea'au was reversing his Ford Explorer SUV from the 29th Avenue driveway when 29-year-old Beke Robert Jr., also of Kea'au, either fell or jumped out of the vehicle. Robert Jr. was subsequently run over by the SUV around 2:40 a.m. and was promptly taken to Hilo Medical Center where he died about an hour later.

The Kalawe was arrested for negligent homicide, driving while intoxicated, inattention driving and driving without a license and insurance. 

An autopsy was ordered for the body of Robert Jr. while police continue to investigate the incident.

The fatality does not contribute to the official county tally of traffic fatalities because it occurred on a private road.
