Kauai Fire Department has retrieved the body of one drowning victim from Friday's tragedy off of South Kalihiwai Point. Search still continues for the second victim.
The victims are identified as 46-year-old Adam Griffiths and 47-year-old Brian Baker, both from San Francisco.
According to Kauai Police, Baker was swept into the ocean by high surf. Griffiths dove in to rescue Baker but was also overcome by the ocean.
Rough waters prevented rescue crews from recovering the bodies Friday.
Recovery efforts resumed Saturday morning, and one body was found shortly after 9 a.m. It is unknown which of the victims was recovered.
Kauai remains in a high surf warning for North and West facing shores through 6 a.m. Sunday. The Fire Department's Ocean Bureau closed beaches at Kee, Haena and Pine Trees, and allowed only limited swimming at Hanalei Pier. The National Weather service advises that anyone entering the waters risks serious injury or death.
