The state Department of Land and Natural Resources confirmed Friday that a boat found in waters off Punaluu is tsunami debris from Japan.
The state consulted with the Japanese Consulate General and found out that the boat is from the Iwate Prefecture, Japan's second-largest prefecture, in northeastern Japan.
The Japanese government will contact the owner of the boat to see if it wanted back.
If the owner doesn't want the boat, the Punaluu family can keep it.
The boat was found by the Kane family a few days before Christmas.
