Pukalani man, 22, charged in deadly Kula crash nearly a year later
Qalivere, 22, charged with manslaughter, negligent injury, drunken driving
Maui County police say officers arrested 22-year-old Libert Qalivere Tuesday at his Pukalani home in connection with the deadly crash in Kula that killed five people nearly a year ago.
Qalivere was charged with five counts of manslaughter, one count of negligent injury in the second degree, two counts of inattention to driving, and one count of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Bail was set at $750,000.
Police say Qalivere was the driver of a blue Dodge Neon that was traveling north on Kula Highway on March 25, 2012 at around 6:30 a.m.
Qalivere lost control of the car about a half mile north of Noholoa Place and the vehicle began to spin counterclockwise, according to investigators. The vehicle crossed over the double solid yellow lines and collided with a car traveling south on Kula Highway.
Police say the Dodge Neon sheared in half, ejecting five of the six people in the vehicle. All five people died from their injuries. Qalivere was wearing his seatbelt and suffered minor injuries.
The three occupants of the other car suffered injuries from the crash and were hospitalized in stable condition.
