JOINT BASE PEARL HABOR-HICKAM, Hawaii -

The Norwegian Cruise Lines vessel Pride of America docked at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility on Saturday to undergo a two week-long extensive maintenance period, according to the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.

While docked at the shipyard, all maintenance work on the ship will be conducted by BAE Systems Ship Repair-Hawaii, which uses the shipyard’s facilities to perform maintenance on all U.S. Navy surface ships in Hawaii and the occasional commercial ship as outlined under a public-private partnership venture.

BAE Hawaii workers will provide round-the-clock maintenance on the ship's main drive pods, sea water cooling system, give her a hull painting and numerous other cosmetic upgrades and enhancements such as restaurant renovation, stateroom refurbishment, and new luxury suites and studio staterooms.

"We want to ensure that we are continuing to enhance the guest experience on this one-of-a-kind vessel,” said Kevin Sheehan, NCL chief executive officer. “Therefore, we are making a major investment, over $30 million in enhancing this ship with beautiful new suites, studios for solo travelers, new restaurants and more."

This is the third Pride of America docking at the shipyard, but the first for extended maintenance.  She docked here in 2008 for a hull painting and in 2010 for a Coast Guard inspection.  The Pride of America is scheduled to return to her seven-day Hawaii itinerary when she returns to service in early April.
