Pono choices or not?UPDATED 11:07 PM HST Feb 05, 2014Video Transcript
Sex ed in schools can be a touchy subject -- but adding the states new program Pono Choices to the mix continues to get parents fired up. At least two meetings went down tonight... KITV4's Brenton Awa is just back from one of them at the state capitol with the details... The state capitol -- filled tonight by opponents of the controversial State DOE sex education program Pono Choices. NAT "McDermott at podium" Representative Bob McDermott knows he's preaching to the choir but says it's important to get the message out to the community -- especially families. 1211 - 1220 - McD "TEACHING 11-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN ABOUT ANAL SEX IS OUTRAGEOUS AND PLAIN WRONG." 1418 - 1425 "IT'S DISTURBING... ...NOTHING TO DO WITH SEX EDUCATION." But the DOE has already reviewed the pilot program and said that it does meet DOE standards for being medically accurate... Abstinence based and age appropriate. Parents are concerned there's no statistics to back the DOE's claims... McDermott thinks he knows why. 1055 - 1110 "I DON'T THINK THEY READ IT... ...WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT." The DOE has heard the criticism -- and will review the curriculum again. 2:07-2:14 from 5pm SOTVO "YES THERE'RE STILL SOME FOLKS CONCERNED AND THE DEPARTMENT IS LISTENING AND THE BOARD IS SAYING WE'RE HEARING YOU AND WE ARE GOING TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT IT AGAIN." Some parents want Pono Choices taken off the books completely ... 1443 - 1449 "HOW WOULD SOMETHING AS... ...EVEN MAKE IT INTO THE CURRICULUM OF SCHOOL?" Representative McDermott tells us he believes about 85-percent of Pono Choices curriculum is accurate -- however he wants changes to be made to the rest of the program. In the mean time they'll continue to organize community meetings -- to keep pressure on the DOE.
