Investigators are putting together the pieces and answer how Officer Chad Morimoto, a motorcycle officer with two years of experience, crashed during training exercises.

"At 11:40am this morning, the Traffic Division's solo bike detail was training near Mililani District Park when Officer Chad Morimoto's motorcycle slid out from under him and hit a curb," said Honolulu Chief of Police Louis Kealoha.

HPD officials confirm Morimoto was participating in a motorcade escort service training exercise, which they conduct four times a year.

Police did not release many details about its investigation, but a witness noticed motorcycles traveling at least 60 miles per hour. 

"They were stopping at each street.   It was sort of like a relay race.   It's the first time I've seen it," said Daniel Rodriguez, a Mililani resident.

"I just heard a noise, some skidding, and then a banging noise. I then looked over and saw a motorcycle lying there," said Melvin Suianaga, a Mililani resident. 

The officer died at Pali Momi Hospital after being transported in critical condition.

According to HPD, Morimoto is the first motorcycle officer to be killed during training in HPD history. 

"This is a time when we need to come together and support each other," said Kealoha.

The eight year veteran joined the HPD in 2004 as a patrol officer in district six Waikiki before joining the traffic division in 2010 as a motorcycle officer.  

Morimoto, 39, is survived by his wife, daughter, and son of Salt Lake.
