Honolulu police officer Michael Steven Chu appeared for his bail hearing in U.S. District court Wednesday.

He faces charges of running two marijuana grow operations.

A federal judge granted Chu's release on $25,000 unsecured bond, and some other conditions.

He had to surrender his U.S. Passport and will be electronically monitored.

Chu is charged with conspiring to possess and distribute 48 marijuana plants and one pound of processed marijuana.

He patroled the Wahiawa and North Shore district and has been with the police department for 13 years.

The woman facing the same charges as Chu, Athena Lee, also appeared in court and was released under similar conditions.

"She needs to follow the law, appear in court, and report regularly to pretrial services," said Stuart Fujioka, the public defender representing Lee. 

During the hearing, Federal Assistant U.S. Attorney Susan Cushman described HPD officer Chu as being "deceitful from the beginning." 

Cushman also added Chu lied to authorities about his residence in Mililani, where federal agents found between 10 to 20 marijuana plants, according to federal documents.
