Honolulu police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who hit a woman crossing the street early Wednesday morning, then fled the scene.

It happened in Waipahu at the intersection of Paiwa Street and Puloku Street.

The woman was hospitalized in critical condition at the Queen's Medical Center.

Just before 6 a.m., Honolulu police said the woman was crossing at Paiwa and Puloku Streets to catch the bus that was stopped, when she was struck by a pickup truck heading south on Paiwa.

“The truck stopped briefly and then continued down the road and left the scene,” said Lt. Bobby Townsend, HPD Traffic Homicide Division.

Honolulu police spent the morning putting together the evidence in the hit-and-run.  Just four houses away from the intersection, the Ramirez family was learning the news about their loved one.

Frieda Quenga said she came out to the scene when she heard on the news there was an accident right down her street.  Little did she know it was her own sister-in-law.

“I didn’t really think because I heard it was an old woman,” said Quenga.

A call to the Queen's Medical Center confirmed the worst.

Quenga said her sister-in-law, Cecelia Ramirez, 49, would take the bus to work at the Honolulu Cookie Company at Sand Island.
