One man dies in Big Island crash
The victim who died in a two car crash on the Big Island on Oct. 11 has been identified by police.
According to the Hawaii Police Department, . of Glenwood died when a van and a station wagon collided fronting the Hirano Store on Highway 11 in Mountain View.
The collision happened around 5 p.m., Isabel Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. He was reportedly not wearing his seat belt.
A 33-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Witnesses said the driver of the station wagon was going North on the highway, and tried to make an abrupt turn into Hirano's Store, but spun out.
Just seconds later, a van came upon the scene.
"That's when I knew the car was going to hit the other car," said eye witness Maria Duquette. "The car that came this way, at 60 miles an hour, flipped three times over."
Hawaii Belt Road was shutdown for several hours in Mountain View while police investigated the scene.
During the closure, Hawaii County police walked a group of Japanese tourists around the roadblock.
The group had been visiting Volcano National Park, and would have missed their flight if delayed any longer.
Isabel Jr. is the 32nd traffic fatality this year on the Big Island compared with just 16 this time last year.
A negligent homicide case has been initiated.
