Big Island police arrested two people Sunday after two teenagers were killed in a deadly crash earlier in the day.
Police said that both drivers of the two vehicles involved in the crash, a Ford pickup truck and the Honda sedan, have been arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
The two vehicles crashed on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Kawaihae Road in South Kohala shortly before 12:16 a.m. Sunday.
Police determined the truck was traveling south on Kawaihae Road and struck the Honda at the intersection.
Officers are still trying to determine the direction of travel for the Honda but it appears the vehicle may have turned in front of the Ford truck.
The 19-year-old driver of the Honda from Paauilo and the 40-year-old driver of the truck from Kamuela suffered minor injuries.
Two teenage passengers of the Honda were ejected from the car. Police said they were not wearing seat belts.
One of the passengers died at the scene. The other teen died at a nearby hospital.
Police identified the victims as 18-year-old Rocky Pactol of Honokaa and Kauaheaheokaua Lactaoen of Kamuela.
These were the 13th and 14th traffic fatalities on the Big Island this year compared with eight at the same time last year.
