Emergency landing on Maui. A Valley Isle highway was closed this evening for some very unusual traffic -- a single engine plane was forced to use the road for a runway. The plane came down in the northbound direction of Piilani Highway and ended up coming to stop near Kilohana Drive. According to fire department personnel, the plane was a Mokulele Airlines Express that had to make an emergency landing because of engine trouble. Kihei resident Kevin Olson spotted the plane coming in fast and low and knew something was wrong right away. 6:20 IT WAS LOWER THAN WE ARE AND WE'RE 400 FEET UP THE MOUNTAIN. SO IT WAS EITHER GOING TO DITCH IN THE OCEAN OR DITCH SOMEWHERE DOWN THERE" 7:20-7:29 "IT WAS A REAL SURPRISE THAT HE DIDN'T HIT ANY CARS OR HOUSES. HE KNEW EXACTLY WHERE HE NEEDED TO GO AND WHERE HE HAD TO BE" 5:34 "THE AMOUNT OF TIME HE HAD TO COME IN AND PUT THE PLANE DOWN HE DID A GREAT JOB. HE SAVED PROBABLY EVERYONE ON BOARD" Rescue personnel say there were eight passengers on board and two pilots. No one was injured in the emergency landing but the highway has been shut down -- first to get emergency crews to the scene and now to remove the airplane. We are waiting for more details from Mokulele Airlines on this emergency landing, and from the state Department of Transportation which is now conducting an investigation at the highway.
