Pipe bomb explodes in Ewa Beach
Honolulu police arrested an 18-year-old man after a pipe bomb exploded in Ewa Beach Saturday night.
Police say the blast happened outside a residential area on Laupapa Place around 6:30 p.m.
The explosion sent concrete and brick tiles flying, damaging several nearby homes and vehicles.
"I was just driving down the road then I heard a loud boom. Good thing I wasn't home because it would have hit my car, or my new car," said witness Alex Gonzales. "When I pulled up I saw cinder blocks everywhere. I checked to see if my other three cars -- make sure the other cars are not hit and so far no damage. But, get choke big rocks around my cars."
No major injuries were reported. The man who reportedly set off the device was hit by shrapnel. His car was also damaged in the blast.
Police say the pipe bomb was a homemade improvised explosive.
