Hawaii County fire officials say an 80-year-old pilot was injured Sunday after a motorized glider crash near the Waimea-Kohala Airport.
Fire crews were called to the scene just after 10 a.m.
Fire officials say during the glider's approach to land, the pilot experienced inadequate lift. The pilot attempted to start the engine in an attempt to make it to the runway, but the engine failed to start.
The glider landed about 150 yards southeast of the runway.
Damage to the glider was estimated at $250,000.
The pilot suffered pain to his sternum and was transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in stable condition.
