HONOLULU -

Emergency Medical Services officials say a man died and a woman was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday after a crash on the Pali Highway heading toward town on the Honolulu side of the Nuuanu Pali Tunnels.

The crash happened just before 9 a.m., closing the Kailua-bound lanes and, later, the Honolulu-bound lanes.

EMS officials say a vehicle collided with a tow truck.  The vehicle ended up in the Kailua-bound lanes.

According to traffic investigators, the tow truck was heading town bound and made a U-turn.  The tow truck's end was sticking out.  A Toyota vehicle was sheared off when it struck the back end of the tow truck and spun into the Kailua-bound lanes.

A man, possibly in his 80s, died at the scene.  A woman in her mid-80s was hospitalized in critical condition.  The man and the woman were in the Toyota, according to EMS.

Police have initiated a negligent homicide case.  All lanes were reopened just after 12 p.m.

We will have a full report tonight on KITV4 News at 5, 6 and 10.
