Oregon man, 61, bitten by shark off Kihei
Victim transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center
Man attacked by shark at Kalama beach, authorities close the area.
Maui police say a 61-year-old man from Lake Oswego, Ore. was bitten Friday morning on his left calf in waters off Kihei by what he described as a 10-feet-long shark.
The man was snorkeling about 250 yards offshore of 1750 Halama Street at around 9:35 a.m.
After he was bitten, the man got up on his paddleboard and was escorted to shore by family and some local canoe club members.
A preliminary investigation reveals that the man sustained a deep laceration to his left calf. Medical personnel who responded confirmed the injuries were consistent with a shark bite.
Authorities said the victim was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
Officials closed the beach from Kamaole III to Waipuilani Park following the incident.
