scenic than the drive between Hawaii Kai and Sea Life Park! Now Oahu's east-side stretch... might get widespread recognition. KITV4's Lara Yamada shows us the new distinction that could be around the bend. MOS: 1022 These are beautiful locations... From Hanauma Bay and Koko Crater... to Sandy Beach and Makapuu Lighthouse. Oahu's east side coastline... is jam-packed with spectacluar sites. KNUDSEN: 21- 26 In my mind this is the most scenic stretch of highway anywhere in the state. In April, Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board Chair Greg Knudsen applied with the state to earn special recognition for what he's calling the "Maunalua- Makapu'u Scenic Byway:" an 6.8-mile stretch of Kalanianaole Highway from Hawaii Kai Drive to the Makai Research Pier. KNUDSEN: 112 This stretch is above and beyond. It's one of four areas viing become a designated Scenic Byway this year: --"Kauhale o Ho'okipa." An area winding through Waikiki. --The roadway encircling Diamond Head. --And on the Big Island: Highway 137 or the "Red Road." Once paved with red cinder. MOS: 1107 It's a nice way to spend the afternoon. STANDUP: 1632-1712 It's not just the beauty of the area, it's also the historical and cultural significance. This obelisk is one of two left that remember the generations of fisherman who lost their lives in these waters. KNUDSEN: 132-45 There's a lot of historic value to it as well. Right where we are the ashes of president obama's mother and grandmother are just off shore. MOS: 1201 I think it's good for the tourism but it is going to cause more traffic More name recognition, more buildup. A clear concern with some. But the special designation could also opens doors for sponsorships and grants to help preserve the area. KNUDSEN: 239-45 We see it as something that can help to preserve this and keep this as wonderful as it is. Lara Yamada KITV4 News. Knudsen applied for the special status right before the deadline in late April. The Advertiser reports an advisory committee will review the application tomorrow... along with those three other Hawaii byways: on Oahu and the Big Island.
