KITV's Paul Drewes explains...this new competition hopes to change the direction of beauty pageants in the future. nat of photographer clicking and taking pictures of contestants aureana@!2:35-2:42 "miss earth hawaii is beauties for a cause, a woman who embraces mother nature and mother earth." shots of international competition -- already in bin The international Miss Earth pageant has been around for a dozen years, shadowed by the larger pageants but gaining in popularity thanks to its green message. aureana@2:09 "as a world we can't agree on religiion or politics but we can agree on a cause that affects our world as a whole" show contestants getting pictures Even some of these local contestants didn't have a clear picture of what this new local pageant was all about. rachel@12:33-12:46 "I had no idea miss earth was different than miss universe or world, but when I realized she has this environmental platform she's an ambassador, I thought that was so amazing" On September 1st, these five Oahu contestants will be joined by four neighbor island competitors when the Miss Earth Hawaii is held. Some are still green to pageants but they've been going green for a while. elise@8:11-8:23 "I do have a small garden, raise chickens and embrace this farm to table idea that I want to talk about and bring to the community" show international competition Like the in the Miss Earth pageant, Miss Earth Hawaii competitors will be scored on their poise and passion. They'll be judged in swimsuits and evening gowns, along with their interviews over environmental issues and their particular platform. rachel@12:!5 "I hope it inspires young girls to be aware and proactive about the environment" standup@16:54-17:04 "not only will these contestants be competing for the local title of Miss Earth Hawaii, four of them will also get a chance to compete in the national event -- held later the same night." back to back pageants are a big undertaking, but local organizers hope successful shows will convince pageant planners to hold future international competitions in Hawaii. aureana@4:56-5:06 "there is no other place that would be more suitable based on the environment and who wouldn't want to come to hawaii, so there is a lot of hope for that " Paul Drewes KITV 4 news. Both the local and national Miss Earth pageants will be held on September 1st at the Ala Moana Hotel ballroom. There is still time for more contestants to enter, the deadline to apply is August 1st. Organizers are looking for women between the ages of 18- and-26, who are single, have no kids and are passionate about the environment.
