Hunnewell Street in Manoa
A broken pipe in Manoa Tuesday caused an estimated 1,275 gallons of untreated wastewater into a storm drain which leads to the Ala Wai canal, according to state health officials and city environmental officials.
City crews were called to 1812 Hunnewell Street just after 8:30 a.m. Environmental workers were able to recover 3,500 gallons of untreated wastewater and discharge it back into the system for proper treatment.
A portion of Hunnewell Street was closed between Vancouver Drive and Seaview Avenue to allow a construction crew to repair the pipe.
State health officials say warning signs are being posted at the Ala Wai Canal and water samples are being taken. The public should stay out of the Ala Wai Canal until warning signs are removed.
