Human remains were found at two sites on the route of the city's rail project in Kakaako on Friday and Saturday, according to the State Historic Preservation Division.

The two sites are near the intersection of Halekauwila Street and Keawe Street.

State officials say disarticulated remains were found at one of the sites, indicating a minimum of two individuals.  Additional excavation was requested to provide further context for the remains, according to state officials.

At the second trench, a complete burial was found.  The burial was protected and excavation will continue in the rest of the trench.  Cultural Surveys Hawaii will test in the area to find a suitable location for the utility box that was to be located in this trench.

State Historic Preservation Division personnel and the Oahu Island Burial Council Chairperson were notified and made site visits to both burial locations.  Treatment of all burials shall follow Hawaii laws regarding burial sites and human remains, according to a statement by the State Historic Preservation Division.

Last month, the first human remains were found in the construction of the Honolulu rail transit project at the corner of Cooke Street and Halekauwila Street.  A bone fragment a few inches long was found.
