A moped rider died in an early morning crash -- that shut down a Manoa road. KITV 4's Paul Drewes has details. This mangled moped lay along Woodlawn Drive for over an hour following the early morning collision. scott@11:12-11:20 "i woke up to a large crash sound, and i looked out my window and there was guy sprawled out, his moped down and parts everywhere" Police officers were able to determine the 54 year man on the moped was coming down Woodlawn Drive just after seven in the morning, when he lost control and struck a telephone pole. Police say there were no signs of alcohol or that the rider tried to brake before the collision - no skid marks on the ground before the pole, just marks where the moped and the man came to a rest. nat of 911 call/or ambulance 11:30-11:44 "we called the ambulance but he had head trauma and he didn't look good, so we just tried to get the cars to stop. Cause they were still trying to go up and down with the accident scene here." After neighbors rushed in to help, police arrived and closed the road. Then investigators spent about two hours looking for clues into the crash. Standup@14:02-14:08 "While neighbors were shocked this was a fatal accident, they weren't surprised. They say this section of the road is an accident waiting to happen" 10:21-10:30 "cars usually speed up and down and there's this bend over here that difficult for drivers sometimes" scott@10:38-10:45 "Especially at nighttime, people are really whipping it around this road." The moped rider was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition but did not survive his injuries. An accident that's also left scars on the neighbors who tried to help. scott@11:59 "I was pretty traumatized by seeing some of that stuff" In manoa, Paul Drewes KITV 4 news. The medical examiner has not yet released the name of the moped rider or determined the cause of death.
