Molokai man charged with girlfriend's murder

Lavoie, 33, also charged with terroristic threatening, various firearms violations

KAUNAKAKAI, Hawaii -

The Molokai man arrested in connection with the murder of his 24-year-old girlfriend has been charged by Maui County police with murder in the second degree.

Wednesday night, Malia Kahalewai was found with a gunshot wound to her chest at the Kawela Barns Apartments in Kaunakakai, according to police.  She later died at the hospital.

Witnesses identified the suspect as her boyfriend, 33-year-old Marlin Lavoie.  He was arrested near his residence Thursday morning in the area known as Honouliwai.

Lavoie was also charged with terroristic threatening and various firearms violations.

Bail was set at $500,000.
