world, there are few coastlines that can rival that of Mendocino. Tonight we take a drive along the shoreline and into this tiny community. It was Horace Greeley who wrote, go west young man. Little did he know ,that once there, the truly adventurous were lured to go north. That's where our journey begins...over the Golden Gate, through the towns along the new frontier..with names rich in Spanish, Indian, and Barbary history..Bodega Bay, Sepastopol, Ukiah, Mendocino. It was named after Spanish viceroy Antonio de Mendoza, but settled by other foreigners: Portuguese fishermen from the Azores, Chinese immigrants, and Bible-quoting New Englanders. While the rest of California swelled with gold rushers, the commodity here was timber... redwood and douglas fir, hewn and logged for the homes Today, less than 900 peope live in Mendocino, now a community of artists and marijuana growers. But the area draws millions every year, eager to see the county's major attraction. JUST AS THE OCEAN CARVED OUR BEAUTIFUL COASTLINE, THE PACIFIC HAS CREATED ANOTHER WORK OF ART, HERE ALONG THE MENDOCINO COASTLINE. MUSIC 3 techtonic plates offshore constantly alter the look and feel of this coastline. He Mendocino fault intersects with the undersea trench of the Gorda Ridge and meets the San Anbdreas Fault. It's called the Mendocino triple junction, and you'd best be aware of its volitiliy before building your home cliffside. These houses have all been abandoned and condemned after half the ridge fell into the sea a decade ago. No problem for sea birds and the California sea lions. They'd like to have this coast all to themselves. Birthing season is pau. Time to chill on the rocks, fat, happy and hapai. Inland, brilliant blossoms invite 13 species of humming bird, including the calliope, weighing as much as a cube of sugar .Our refuge is the albionriver inn, next to the albion river, teeming with oysters, clams and abalone. And from our lanai we enjoy Mendocino's grape and a northern vista of this Golden State. That's mixed plate. Next week we walk through Mendocino's forest to get close and personal to the redwoods.
