Who was the missing Maui pilot?
A single-engine, four-seat airplane disappears from radar during a flight from Maui to Molokai.
The Coast Guard and other agencies are racing against time to figure out what happened to the plane with one man on board. The Coast Guard said they found a debris field about 2.5 miles north of Maui, where the plane went off radar.
"When our aircraft initially came on scene they did see a debris field that was consistent with that aircraft. In fact, that debris field consisted of items that looked like came from the interior of that aircraft," said Lt. Leigh Cotterell with the Coast Guard.
The Cessna airplane disappeared at about 7 p.m. Saturday. The Coast Guard was on scene in half an hour from when the plane was reported missing and has been searching continuously.
"The nature of the debris field the Coast Guard has seen, we are still searching, but the debris field is consistent with potentially this crash not being survivable," said Cotterell.
The Cessna pilot Jose Krall reported as the only person in the airplane was well known in the community.
"Very kind and mellow guy. I've been serving him a couple times here at the restaurant," said a Gerard's Maui employee.
Krall was the owner of the popular Maui Bake Shop and Deli.
"I really like especially their croissant was fantastic, and they had a very nice product," said Gerard's employee.
