It sounded like a workable plan.  Nearly eight years ago, the McCully District Park swimming pool was shut down for repairs and was scheduled to reopen the next year.

Only now, the pool reopened.

The pool closed down in 2005 and the closure was supposed to be temporary.

Swimmer Bret Place used to bring all of his kids to the pool.  It's been a long wait!

"It's super ridiculous," said Place.  "Now all those kids are grown and they have kids of their own and our next generation of kids are starting to show up at the pool."

The gym and the pool had to have major structural renovations, such as reinforcing the foundation.  Residents were told by city officials that the repairs were only supposed to take about a year.

Parks and Recreation says electrical system problems slowed its crews down.  Since the pool is above ground, repairs are difficult.

"We knew about the closing, but we didn't expect it to be as long as it was," said swimmer Mark Carvalho.

Almost a decade later, the community is ready to use this pool.

"Some of the older crowd that don't have cars to go to the beach, it's easy for them to come across the street or something," said Carvalho.

The city pool is open to the public and free for anyone to swim in.  It's open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m  The gym has been open for a year.
