Massive boulder crashes down into apartment complex parking lot in Kuliouou
East Honolulu residents know the sound of rumbling rocks all too well. A massive boulder crashed down into an apartment complex parking lot in Kuliouou Saturday morning.
"I heard a rumbling sound and I woke up and I thought what is that loud noise. More like a thump, thump, thump, thump, and soon as I guess it landed in the driveway I heard a big crash," said resident Hill Hanta.
Hanta then went outside to find his and his neighbors car destroyed by a boulder. Witnesses said the boulder started off as the size of a car and broke into smaller pieces, rolled down the hill, hit the pavement, then the car port roof and finally smashed into the two cars.
Residents said they're just glad the cars were in the way of the complex because they say the damage could have been much worse.
"The only thing I'm thankful for is that my wife didn't work this morning because if she was working she would have left the house at 6 a.m. the car wouldn't be there," said Hanta.
Instead, the boulder would have most likely hit his bedroom wall just a couple feet away from the parking lot. This isn't the first time a large boulder went rolling down a hill in the area.
"About eight years ago there was another rock that came off the hill on the other side of the property, landed in the parking lot," said Lester Higa Haleloa II building manager.
Contractors went up the hill to investigate other loose rocks on the property and crew member Sione Teu said he found a rock that he said is on the verge of falling.
The building managers said they are considering putting up more fencing to protect their residents.
