5,181 -- that's the number of people who signed up to testify on the Marriage Equality Bill. But so far, House committees have only gotten through about 1,000 of those. So what happens now? KITV4's Brenton Awa has the answer. 3900 - 3915 "YOU'VE HEARD FROM HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE TODAY, WHEN I CAME WALKING DOWN HERE TONIGHT, THERE WAS STILL PEOPLE POUNDING THE PAVEMENT, WAVING SIGNS IN OPPOSITION, LISTEN TO THEM." After hours of testimony in front of the House Judiciary and Finance Committees -- fatigue set in across parts of the crowd. Some families waited all day for a chance to speak -- and the committee chairs were going to let that happen even if it meant staying up into the early morning hours. But confusion as to the scheduling of testimony was brought up as the clock hit midnight. 4157 - 4212 "READ IT... READ IT." "NO WE ARE READING IT, REPRESENTATIVE WARD CAN YOU SIT DOWN?" "IT'S FRIDAY... IT'S THURSDAY NIGHT AT 1-O'CLOCK, THIS THING SAYS COME BACK TOMORROW A press release said testimony would go until midnight -- and resume in the morning... 4056 - "I WOULD APPEAL THE RULING OF THE CHAIR, LET THE PEOPLE GO HOME GET SLEEP, COME BACK TOMORROW AND WE WHO ARE HALF BRAIN DEAD WILL BE ABLE TO COME BACK AND MAKE A DECISION ON THIS PARTICULAR BILL." CLAPPING And with that came a recess. Waking up some... 4534 "WE WANT TO GO HOME." And then there was a final decision. 1637 "WE WILL BE STOPPING TAKING TESTIMONY NOW." 5236 "WE WANT TO HEAR WHETHER ITS NUMBER 1 OR NUMBER 5000, WE WANT THE SAME AMOUNT OF CLOUT GIVEN TO THE FIRST TESTIFIER, AS THE LAST TESTIFIER. 4800 "WE HAD BEEN IN SESSION SINCE 10 THIS MORNING SO IT HAD BEEN ABOUT 14 HOURS OF TESTIMONY -- WE STILL HAD A LOT OF PEOPLE TO GO -- AND IT WASN'T FEASIBLE TO GO OVERNIGHT." Brenton Awa KITV4 News The public hearing will resume this morning at 8:30 -- with testifier number 1001. A reminder -- if you missed the midnight sign-up deadline last night -- you will NOT be able to testify.
