Strong currents proved to be a major problem Sunday morning, as a man nearly drowns off shore in the Kaaawa area.

Fire crews also had a hard time finding the swimmer.  The man, in his 50s, was found unresponsive when rescuers pulled him out of the water.

The victim was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition.
