Maui police searched a stolen rental vehicle Wednesday used by a man who was shot and killed by an officer and found a clear glass smoking pipe, which police said is used to smoke crystal methamphetamine, firearms and other items.
Police said 31-year-old Marshall Langford of Wailuku tried to run away when officers found him in a suspected stolen vehicle in the parking lot of the Mana Kai Maui Resort in Kihei on Tuesday.
That's when police said Langford pulled out a handgun and pointed it at one of the officers. An officer responded by firing his weapon at the suspect.
The firearms found in the vehicle that Langford occupied included a sawed-off shotgun. The weapon that was believed to be a semi automatic pistol was actually an airsoft pellet gun.
A second man involved in the incident identified as 28-year-old Lorden Cooper, also from Wailuku, was arrested Wednesday on firearms charges and for stealing a vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing.
The officer involved in the shooting is on administrative leave as part of standard procedure.
