Longtime Hawaii newspaper columnist Eddie Sherman has died. His wife Patty said he suffered a massive stroke Tuesday night.  He was 88.

Sherman rubbed shoulders with some of entertainment's best, including Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Bette Midler.

Local entertainer Jimmy Borges, credits his career to Sherman.

"Eddie got me my first job in Waikiki in 1970 and I'll never forget that. He liked me cause I looked like Kui Lee," Borges said.

Sherman started a fund for Kui Lee, a local singer-songwriter who died of cancer in the 1960s.

But for most, Sherman is probably best known for covering the headliners in his local three-dot entertainment column.

Borges said, "He would write a sentence and everything would be positive. Nothing negative."

"There were items and names and it was successful because people liked Eddie," said Cobey Black, who worked in the newspaper business alongside Sherman for decades.

"He would be at the various hotels and and meet all these people so he decided to write about it," Black added.

Sherman made Hawaii his home in the 1950s, when he worked at KGU Radio with Tom Moffatt.
