A nightmare was predicted, and it came true in the new year!
Long lines and big headaches greeting folks at the City Square DMV in Kalihi.
Starting Wednesday, state identification cards are being issued at all drivers' license locations in Honolulu, Maui and Kauai counties. In Hawaii County, state IDs will only be issued at the drivers' license offices in Hilo and Kona.
The state ID program used to be handled by the Attorney General's office, but the transportation department and county offices are now running the program.
Unfortunately, that's bumping up wait times for everyone.
"I'm just here to take a permit -- just to take a test," said Kai Kaikaka. "Just looking at the line, it's crazy and I'm going to be here for a while."
"To me it worse, I'm here for my drivers' license and my state ID," said Carol Kadena.
People waiting in line today, at the very least, are still getting cheaper fees.
In the next few months, fees will bump up from $20 to $40 for an 8-year ID.
