Local restaurant closes its doors for good on Easter Sunday

Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab has been around for 15 years

Many businesses are rebounding with signs of brighter times for the local economy. For others, the slump was too long to overcome.

Customers were taking a final poses in front of  Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab. The restaurant served local cuisine for 15 years closed it's doors for good on Easter Sunday.

"It's pretty sad because they've been around for so long and there's no other on this island," said customer Luana Resuello.

It was owned by Good Eats U.S.A., but used Sam Choy's name and menu. The general manager said like other local restaurants, they hit hard times starting four years ago.

"The economy changed the restaurant," said general manager Jeffrey Gaspar.

They aimed to serve abut 600 customers a day, but Gaspar said they couldn't even fill half of that goal. The managers said signing another 15-year lease didn't seem possible.

For Hawaii residents it's another local spot that will now just be a memory.

"I grew up with Sam Choy's and Kapahulu closed, so what's next on the horizon for Hawaii," said customer Esther Uong.

It will be fond memories for valet Scott Musgrave, who had worked at Choy's since the doors opened.

"It's been very up and down emotions seeing all the people who came here over the 16 years watching their kids grow," said valet Scott-Musgrave.

The general managers told KITV4 the owners of the building are thinking of putting another restaurant at the location. Staff members hope another Sam Choy's, perhaps a smaller one will open in Honolulu.
