to SUE the state of Hawaii.. Good evening, I'm Yunji De Nies. And I'm Paula Akana. The battle over the controversial barriers along Laniakea beach on the North Shore just went to a new level.. KITV4's Nana Ohkawa joining us now with tonight's TOP story. Nana? Paula, Yunji, Big wave surfers such as Reno Abellira say the concrete barriers have created even more of a traffic nightmare in the area and has blocked one of the most popular surf breaks. Some big wave surfers have a big problems with these barriers. First and foremost, they say the barriers block access to Laniakea Support park .. Reno Abellira's been surfing the Laniakea break for more than 50 years. Reno Abellira- pro surfer 1043 THE LANIAKEA BARRICADE THE DOT MADE IS NOT A SOLUTION IT'S A PUNISHMENT AND IM VERY UPSET ABOUT IT 1053 Bill Saunders- attorney 432 THE STATE IS TRYING TO PRETEND ITS DOING THIS AS A MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE OR REPAIR OR EXCEPTION TO STATE AND COUNTY LAWS THAT REQUIRE IT TO GET A SHORELINE MANAGEMENT PERMIT AS WELL AS AN ENVIRONMENT AL ASSESSMENT 449 The DOT installed the 45 concrete barriers to test if that would help keep traffic moving in the heavily congested area... a popular place... for tourists to park across the street and cross over to see turtles...or to surf. But, the plaintiffs say the barriers have actually increased traffic... and danger in the area. 2113 ALL THEY'VE REALLY DONE IS PUSH THE CONGESTION UP TO NOW WHERE CHUNS REEF IS EVERYONE SLOWING DOWN PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SEE THE TURTLE THEY ARE BASICALLY ABOVE AND BELOW LANIAKEA NOW 2130 FORCING people to walk up and down along the highway. Bill Martin- surfer 2246 WE ARE TALKING ABOUT FAMILIES WITH STROLLERS ME IN A WHEELCHAIR THAT'S REALLY HEAVY THERE'S ONLY A BIKE STRIP PAVED AREA ALONG THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY 2259 The people suing say they agree that there's a problem in the area.. They just don't agree with how the state has decided to fix it. 818 THE SMARTER SOLUTIONS THAT HAVE COME FROM GRASSROOTS IN THE COMMUNITY HAVE BEEN IGNORED AND THIS SLEDGE HAMMER APPROACH OF OK WE WILL BLOCK OFF THE PARKING IS PROBABLY THE WORST OPTION OF ALL 832 The D-O-T says it hasn't seen the lawsuit and doesn't comment on ongoing litigation.
