For a few weeks, a mountain of sand has been sitting on the side of a Kailua road.

Some say it's an eyesore and even a health hazard.

The huge mound of gray sludge is material dredged from Kaelepulu Stream, mostly from under a bridge near Kailua Beach Park.

"That material had accumulated over a period of time and it's part of our maintenance to make sure that the stream is able to flow properly and that the bridge is not overloaded by the amount of weight sitting on top of the footings for the bridge," said Ross Sasamura, director of facility maintenance for the city and county of Honolulu.

The city says all this sand was left here because it needs time to dry out, and that has left an unpleasant smell.

Sasamura said, "We can't transport the wet material that might leak water out, leach water out while we're transporting it because that wouldn't be appropriate."

Which means our recent wet weather is delaying the big move.

Kailua resident Paul Perry said, "Whatever they're doing, hopefully it's for some good and it'll be done soon. Just got to deal with it."

While some are just running by the issue, others say it's a pile of problems.

"Don't leave it here. This is extremely unsightly. The germs that from the stream, sitting here, it's very unhealthy," Kailua resident Lynn Kay said.
