Silencing the shooting range. Good Evening. I'm Lara Yamada in for Pamela Young. The city has closed the Koko Head complex indefinitely ... KITV4's Brenton Awa tells us why -- and when it could re-open. NATS "...gunshot noise." That noise -- still can be heard at Koko head crater. But not at the rifle range -- where benches -- sit empty ... After 2 reports of stray bullets landing in a residential area nearby. 705 - 711 - KIRK "WE'RE GOING TO BE CLOSING IT DOWN TEMPORARILY WHILE WE COMPLETE THE INVESTIGATION." The rifle range is on this side of of Koko Crater... Officials say one of those bullets was reported to have hit a car -- here -- near the Botanical Garden. The other struck a home in one of these subdivisions. In May -- a woman's van was hit while parked at Sandy beach. It's still unclear if any of those bullets came from the range. 937 - 940 - MIKE "IT IS POSSIBLE, I WOULDN'T SAY IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. ITS HIGHLY UNLIKELY BUT POSSIBLE." Mike Muramoto manages the complex. He's seen bullets ricochet off the berm before... and says the area is in need of renovation. 1528 - MIKE "IF IT HITS SOMETHING IT'S VERY UNPREDICTAB LE HOW FAR IT WILL GO OR WHERE IT WILL GO." Matt Longfellow says the only way bullets could reach the opposite side of the crater... Is by shooting directly over it. 1910 - 1920 - MATT "I JUST CANNOT IMAGINE SOMEBODY POINTING A GUN THAT HIGH INTO THE AIR, YOU KNOW AN ACCIDENT COULDVE HAPPENED BUT ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN." 2553 - 2606 - BRENTON "THE CITY SAYS THIS BERM IS SUPPOSED TO BE AT 90-DEGREES BUT AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS OF WEAR AND TEAR, SOME OF THESE PLACES LOOK MORE LIKE 45. THE PLAN NOW IS TO FILL IT IN AND GET IT BACK TO THAT RIGHT ANGLE." The city also plans to create an eyelash -- extending this roof. To keep shooters from mis-firing into the sky. 809 - KIRK "BOTH OF THESE CAN BE DONE FAIRLY QUICKLY." BUTT TO 1128 - 1133 - KIRK "MY GOAL HERE IS TO GET IT RUNNING AGAIN IN A SAFE WAY." But will it solve the problem? Gun enthusiasts say the city's aim -- might be off target. 2118 - 2125 - MATT "WITHOUT THE STUDY OF THE BULLET, THESE REPAIRS MAY BE JUST FOR SHOW." Either way -- the city says the improvements are needed. It'll get an emergency permit on Monday to start the work... And expects the rifle range to be back up and running by early next month.
