Replacing an historic wall
It has been more than four months since a bus driver crashed through a concrete wall fronting Kawaiahao Church.
It was quite a scene in April. Oahu Transit Services says a 44-year-old city bus driver had some kind of medical issue and crashed his bus into the wall, just missing students on a dinner break before a concert.
On Monday, crews finally started cleaning up the rubble. Kawaiahao Church Trustee Bill Haole says inspection and permitting took a while, especially since it's an historic structure.
"We know that people are curious, but they're also wanting to have a piece of history, so we realize some piece may not be here," said Haole. "Our whole effort is to try to restore it using as much of the original pieces as possible."
It's going to cost anywhere from $70,000 to $100,000 and restoration is expected to be completed in about six weeks.
The bus driver had surgery and he's doing okay.
