flames...and investigators trying to figure out what went wrong. Good evening, I'm Yunji de Nies. It happened on Kauai's west side - at the helm, a pilot with decades of experience ...someone who KITV has flown with before. KITV4's Brenton Awa has our top story tonight. A fire in the hills of Waiakamo'o Valley...that smoke.. from the crash site of an aircraft that went down in this morning. NATS "chopper..." Firefighters recovered the bodies of the two people on board -- the passenger and the pilot... There were no survivors. The "Evolution Trikes Revo" --- a Special Light Sport Aircraft was owned by a Hanapepe powered hang gliding company Birds in Paradise. The company's been offering power gliding trips for more than 20-years. It's founder is Gerry Charlebois ... He was the pilot of this mornings fatal flight. 00:40 - 00:45 - NATS "..." In 2003 -- Charlebois took KITV's Gary Sprinkle for a ride over Kauai in a similar aircraft. He explained how these powered gliders are built -- and showcased their durability. 215 "YOU COULD TAKE A KNIFE AND STICK IT IN AND YOU WOULD HAVE A REALLY HARD TIME EVEN PULLING IT THROUGH THE FABRIC." He also explained the feeling of flying a light sport aircraft. 126 "THE WING IS AN EXTENSION OF YOURSELF, IT'S WEIGHT SHIFTS SO YOUR BODY BECOMES PART OF IT. THE WING FLEXES AND YOU'RE BECOMING A PART OF THE CENTRIFUCAL FORCE OF THE WING." A pilot with SO much experience...now the victim of a crash. Investigators will keep that in mind, as they try to figure out what went wrong. e F-A-A and N-T-S-B will investigate this crash ... This is the first light sport aircraft crash on Kaua'i since 2011. That year -- two separate crashes left four people dead.
