Karsten Thot bridge back open
A big relief for drivers as both sides of the Karsten Thot bridge reopened Friday morning. The Department of Transportation closed the bridge mid-September for repairs.
“It’s a lot better form where traffic has been,” said driver Dustin Harrison. “I work in Whtimore so usually I get stuck going all away around and coming back around during traffic so it’s been a hour extra to get out of there to get out of there every day.”
D.O.T says drivers will have to slow down between the hours of 6am to 6pm to 15 miles per hour as crew continue work underneath the bridge. Despite the reduced speed limit, traffice seemed to flow smoothly even during Friday's evening commute.
"It's good that is open," said Kit Blackwelder. "It’s astonishing to hear it would be closed for so long."
Drivers were not the only ones happy to hear the major connector through Wahiawa was finally open.
“It’s really good they opened the bridge now hopefully so business will kinda of pick up,” said Kapeka Travis, supervisor at Maui Mikes.
This restaurant as well as many others near the bridge have lost money since traffic was diverted to alternate routes.
“It’s just been killing us, business has gone down by 20 percent or so it’s just a lot of business in Wahiawa are going a little down.” said Travis.
Travis hopes with the bridge re-opening things will look up.
