Kauai police has arrested the driver of a sports-utility vehicle that struck and killed a 26-year-old Waimea woman on Saturday.

Robert Yount, 82, of Kalaheo was booked by police.  He was released from custody on Saturday pending further investigation.

According to a preliminary police report, Jill Garnett was walking along the east-bound shoulder of Kaumuali'i Highway heading west when at around 8:55 a.m. she was struck by an east-bound SUV near the Kipu Road junction.

Yount was not injured in the collision.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
