Bringing new life and energy to a historic neighborhood. That's what some merchants hope to accomplish with a new monthly tradition.

Twenty-five businesses took part in the inaugural "Third Friday Kaimuki" Friday night. The shops stayed open late to showcase their products and services and lure in new clients. 
    
"We want more business and more traffic on this side of town sometimes it can be slow, " said Silvana Alfonso, owner of Mod Vintage and "Third Friday Kaimuki" organizer. " Want to bring awareness about what's going on because there's so much this community."

The streets were packed with people enjoying live music, free food and discounts at the shops. Even part of the old Queen Theater was open to the public. The first floor showcased an art gallery and live music. Though it was early, several businesses reported seeing new clientele and a boost in business.

 "I know a lot of my regular customers and these are people I've never seen before in Kaimuki so that's really nice," said Liz Schwartz, owner of Coffee Talk.

Organizers say they want to make this family-oriented event bigger and better every month.
