HILO, Hawaii -

Ka'u resident David Kaawa was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years in prison for sexually abusing a child, according to Hawaii County Prosecuting Attorney Charlene Iboshi.

In April, a jury found Kaawa sexually abused a child in his care for years before the child turned 14.  He was also found to have sexually assaulted the child after the child turned 14.

He was found guilty of continuous sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14 and sexual assault in the first degree.  Each charge has a mandatory 20 year prison sentence.

Judge Ronald Ibarra ordered that the two sentence run consecutively to each other.
