Ka'anapali beach evacuated after shark bite

Beach will remain closed until noon Wednesday

KA`ANAPALI, Hawaii -

A 58-year-old man from Marina Del Ray, Calif. was bitten by a shark Tuesday morning, in waters fronting 110 Ka'anapali Shores Place, according to Maui County officials.

The incident was reported at around 8:30 a.m.  Surfers were evacuated from the water and the beach is closed for a mile in both directions from the area where the shark bite took place.

Fire crews described the victim's wound as a six-inch bite outline of the shark's mouth on the victim's thigh.  The victim was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

Ocean Safety is patrolling the beach, from Black Rock to Honokowai, and warning people to stay out of the water.

Th Department of Land and Natural Resources will be posting signs along the beach as well.

The beach will remain closed until noon Wednesday.
