Nearly a year after their cat was mauled to death, a heartbroken family gets their answer from the courts.
Last May, hunting dogs strayed off the trail and attacked their cat Sweetie near Kuliouou Park.
It was a devastating loss for the family, who took the case to court accusing the dog owners of negligence.
But, after a drawn-out legal battle, a judge sided with the dog's owners, agreeing the case was tragic, but did not rise to the level of a crime.
Sweetie's family has maintained, what they really wanted to come out of the case was an apology and education on a how pet owners should take responsibility for their animals.
They're glad their case has raised awareness about hunting issues.
Last year, the Honolulu City Council passed a resolution calling for the state to tighten regulations on loose hunting dogs.
