A helpful aim at hunters. A handful of bills were introduced into the house all focused on keeping the culture of hunting alive in Hawaii. KITV4's Nana Ohkawa is here with more. Lawmakers say hunters approached them wanting a voice and to be heard in this growing urban environment .. they're responding by trying to keep hunting land ...just that. Allowing hunters to hunt... Seems simple enough... But the population has shifted.. 1557 THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR IN HISTORY THAT MORE PEOPLE LIVE IN URBAN ENVIRONMENT S THAN RURAL ENVIRONMENT S 1601 And because of that.. There's concern city slickers might not understand the need for hunters. 1238 HUNTERS ARE CONSERVATIO NISTS THEY ARE OUR EYES THEY ARE THE ONES THAT WALK THE LAND SEE WHAT'S GOING ON THEY ARE IN THE FOREFRONT IN PROTECTING OUR HABITAT 51 They point to the situation on Maui... 1634 WE HAVE A VERY BIG PROBLEM ON MAUI WITH AXIS DEER 1641 More than 8-thousand deer at last count.. Hunters can keep that population from getting out of control. 1526 THEY WANTED THE DEPARTMENT AND PEOPLE WHO MANAGED GAME TO WORK WITH THEM AND BE A PART OF THE REMOVAL OF SOME OF THEIR ANIMALS 39 Five new bills being introduced this session could help protect hunting.. One makes it harder to take away public hunting land, another would let children tag along... Another helps the board of land and natural resources to enforce wildlife laws across the state. 1322IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT IF PEOPLE ARE DOING BAD THINGS IN OTHER STATES THAT THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO SHARE THAT INFORMATION BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT PEOPLE COMING HERE AND POACHING 31 There's also a bill to designate September as "outdoor heritage month." And one that would allow certain veterans to get lifetime hunting licenses.. For a small fee.
