The Hawaiian Humane Society launched an investigation into who fired shots at cats near the Hawaii Kai Park and Ride in broad daylight.
The area is home to dozens of stray felines. The Humane Society received reports a man used a BB gun to shoot at cats last Friday afternoon. According to a witness, one cat was hit and ran off. The Humane Society doesn't know if the animal survived.
"It just seems odd that someone may be coming out early afternoon and take this kind of action. It seems rather bold," said Ernie Molieri, a Humane Society investigator.
Molieri canvassed the area near the Park and Ride Thursday evening with fliers. The Humane Society is offering a $2,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest. The animal advocacy group emphasizes torturing, poisoning and killing cats is a felony.
"That's a really malicious and cruel act to go to that extent," said Molieri.
Word about the violence against the feral cats spread fast in Hawaii Kai. Many are shocked about the allegations.
"I can't believe someone would go shoot them. That's so mean," said resident Jennifer Bradbury.
With the reward fliers up, some neighbors say they will keep a closer eye on the stray cats and report any suspicious activity to police.
"I drive by here every night so I often see the cats out here," said Julia Wallace. "I will keep my eye out to see if there's anybody suspicious out."
