...and doing so won't cost you a penny ... KITV4's Brenton Awa shows us... All you need to have is time and love, and maybe a hankerin' to play some FETCH.. Man's best friend -- needs your help... Look at these faces. Cute, cuddly... But overcrowded. The Hawaiian Humane Society has too many dogs. Now they're asking ... If you can't adopt one, can you foster one for a little while? 1017 "WE HAVE A HUGE PET OVER POPULATION PROBLEM ON OAHU, AND WE CAN ONLY HELP THAT BY HAVING PEOPLE COME AND GET ANIMALS FROM US OR OTHER RESCUES SO WE CAN MAKE MORE ROOM FOR MORE ANIMALS THAT ARE COMING INTO OUR DOORS." Christina Kam says the shelter gets around 80 animals per day. Once they're ready for adoption -- the humane society will keep them as long as it takes to find a new home. There are 55 dogs waiting now -- but staff tell us that number should be at 30. and that's where you come in... 806 "THERE'S NO TRAINING, WE GIVE YOU ALL THE SUPPLIES YOU NEED, WE JUST ASK THAT YOU OPEN YOUR HOME FOR A WEEK TO TWO WEEKS. Kam says on any given day there are already roughly 100 animals out on foster care. Right now... That's not enough. They need more foster parents. 811 "IT KIND OF GIVES THE ANIMAL A NICE LITTLE BREAK, A VACATION AND WHAT IT DOES IS OPEN UP A SPACE IN OUR KENNELS FOR ANOTHER DOG TO COME OUT AND BE ADOPTED." If youre worried about getting attached ... 1051 "A LOT OF OUR FOSTER FRIENDS REALLY LOVE WHEN THEY FIND OUT THAT THE ANIMAL FOUND A LOVING HOME AND THEY FEEL REALLY GOOD THEY HELPED THE ANIMAL GET THERE." If you're interested in fostering a dog -- just show up during business hours to pick one out -- again -- it's free. and.. with the holidays coming up -- The Humane Society also wants to remind the public to stay away from buying puppies as surprise gifts for the family. The shelter has seen dogs surrendered to it -- from families that weren't ready for the commitment.
