HONOLULU -

Fire Chief Kenneth G. Silva announced Friday that he will retire from the Honolulu Fire Department on Dec. 31, 2012.

The Honolulu Fire Commission appointed Chief Silva as the Fire Chief on Jan. 18, 2006.  Chief Silva will have over 31 years of service with the HFD when he retires in December.

"I feel honored to have had the privilege to serve as Fire Chief and work as a public servant for the City of Honolulu," said Chief Silva.  "I have enjoyed being part of the Honolulu Fire Department family these many years and consider working with the members of the Honolulu Fire Department to be the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had. I leave with the confidence that the department rests in good hands and will continue to provide excellent service to our community."

Chief Silva said the Honolulu Fire Commission will work with the City Human Resources Department to begin the process of selecting the next Fire Chief and that he will continue to work with the Commission and his Executive Staff to ensure an orderly transition.

Under Chief Silva’s command, the Honolulu Fire Department received its second reaccreditation; worked to pass an ordinance banning most consumer fireworks on Oahu; developed an All-Hazards Incident Management Team program; worked with Federal, State, and County agencies to plan and prepare for public safety needs at the Asia-Pacific Economic Conference; acquired the HFD’s first engines with compressed air foam systems; and introduced the HFD’s Smoke Alarms for Everyone program.

Silva began his service with the fire department on November 16, 1981 and worked his way up through the ranks as a Fire Fighter, Captain, and Battalion Chief, before becoming an Assistant Chief in 2002.  He was the fire department’s Manager of the Year in 2001.  He has a bachelor’s degree from University of Hawaii-West Oahu and master’s degree in public administration from UH-Manoa.
