Honolulu condo fire causes $1.15 million in damage

An early morning fire Tuesday at the Marco Polo condominium on Kapiolani Boulevard and Isenberg Street caused $1.15 million in damage, according to fire officials.

The fire broke out at around 2:40 a.m.

As residents made their way out, flames were seen coming from the building.  The fire was extinguished about an hour later.

Kapiolani Blvd. was closed for several hours and reopened at around 6 a.m.

Two units were damaged in the fire, according to fire officials.  Investigators say the fire also scorched the outside of the building for another two or three floors.

Fire officials say most of the damage came from heat and smoke damage to the common interior area of the 8th floor.

Four people who lived in the unit on the 8th floor, where the fire started, escaped unharmed.  No major injuries were reported.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.  The Red Cross is helping affected residents.
