Honolulu Zoo sloth gets a new girlfriend from PeruUPDATED 8:48 PM HST Feb 14, 2014Video Transcript
On this Valentine's Day... love knows no boundaries. At the Honolulu Zoo... there's one sloth in particular that is patiently waiting for cupid to work his magic. KITV-4's Ashley Moser is GOING WILD! ALL NEW at 6... Meet Harriet she's a 4 -year- old...2 toed sloth all the way from Peru. Her visit here to the islands has just become a permanent one ...all thanks...to love! ) Dr. Baird Fleming Assistant Zoo Director 14:39 "WE'VE HAD A MALE SLOTH AT THE ZOO FOR MANY YEARS NOW AND ACTIALLY IT WASN'T UNTIL RECENTLY THAT WE WERE ABLE TO FIND HIM A GIRLFRIEND." 14:48 But this Valentine's day...no roses...no box of chocolates... just...fruit! 10:48 "B:WOULD YOU LIKE SOME APPLE? WHAT DO YOU THINK? NOW ONE THING YOU'LL NOTICE ABOUT HER WORLD IS IT'S UPSIDE DOWN HAHA." A: It sure is but her diet...I mean she's a healthy eater...apples ...banana. B: THEY'RE VEGETARIANS! IN THE WILD THESE GUYS WOULD EAT A LOT OF LEAVES. WE DO SUPPLEMENT THEIR DIET A LOT WITH LEAVES ...WE GIVE THEM THINGS THAT THEY WOULDN'T FIND IN THE BUSH LIKE APPLES! A: I love how she eats ... She has those toes she kind of claw in there. Tell me about the strength of their hands. B: THEY'RE VERY VERY STRONG ANIMALS. WE WERE TALKING ABOUT HOW SLOW THEY ARE.THEY ARE PHYSICALLY SLOW MOVERS. BUT IT'S REALLY VERY DECEIVING. YEAH THEY'RE NOT CHEETAHS. THEY CAN'T MOVE 60 MPH ACROSS THE PLAINS. BUT THEY ARE ACTUALLY PRETTY FAST. BECAUSE THEY SPEND ALL THEIR TIME UPSIDE DOWN ...THAT IS JUST A NATURAL ANGLE FOR THEM. AND IF THEY WANT TO PUT PRESSURE WITH THAT CLAW...YOU SEE IT BARRING DOWN THERE... THERE'S A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PRESSURE. AND THEY ACTUALLY HAVE A RATCHETING SYSTEM." 11:55 Doctor Baird says that pressure is so strong ... That if they don't want to let you go... they won't! But he says it's their coarse coat of hair that really protects them from predators. Baird 12:51 "THAT UNDER LAYER HELPS HER DEAL WITH ANTS. BECAUSE THESE GUYS ARE MOVING SO SLOWLY THEY'LL GO THROUGH AN ANT PILE IN A TREE AND SO THEY HAVE TO RELY ON THEIR NATURAL DEFENSES MEANING WHAT THEY'VE GOT...BODY ARMOR... TO KEEP THOSE ANTS AWAY." 13:07 He says even though their hair is truly unmistakable it's not always easy to see them because they are rainforest animals that rely on stealth abilities to stay away from their predators. Baird 12:22 "Unfortunatley out in the wild these guys are prime pickings for harpy eagles." 12:27 So whether you think sloths are "slow" and "lazy" or cuddley and cute... At the Honolulu Zoo... They're about to get romantic! 18:33 "Lot's to say huh..." 18:36 ...Ashley Moser, KITV 4 News.
