A hiker is in critical condition after falling about 30 feet near the Makapuu Lighthouse trail around 1 p.m. Saturday.

According to fire officials, the 27-year-old man went off trail to the second lighthouse fronting Hawaii Kai, when the ground beneath him gave way. 

He was airlifted to a landing zone where he was transported to the Queen's Medical Center.

The hiker's companion was not injured.
